The tradition of dancing with candles
Candle dances have been performed since ancient times, in countries from Armenia to Myanmar.
In Armenia the candle dance is traditionally the last dance at wedding parties. When the candles are blown out at the end of the dance the guests know it is time to go home.
In France and Belgium there was a candlestick ball dance for lords and ladies, in which partners were chosen during the course of the dance. When the candles were blown out at the end of the dance the room became dark and the partners kissed.
Today many traditional cultures, including those of Egypt, Armenia, India and the Philippines, still perform candle dances.
The candle itself is always a dancer. The flame sways gently in a tranquil ballet, or capers in effervescent joy. Shadows play on surfaces and faces glow softly in the reflected light of the flame's dance.
